Some praise songs fade after one season, but “Tobechukwu” is still the kind of song that gets a whole church on its feet. It brought together trumpeter and worship leader Nathaniel Bassey, convener of the Hallelujah Challenge, and the much loved Mercy Chinwo.
The title is Igbo, and it simply means “start praising God”, with “Chukwu” meaning God. So from the very name, the song is a call to give thanks.
It came as the lead single from Hallelujah Live, a 16 track live album that also features Sinach, William McDowell and Victoria Orenze. This is the live recording, which explains the long, joyful run of over eight minutes.
