So Toyin Abraham has done it again. Just when we thought her 2026 was winding down, she’s popped up with news that’s got Nollywood lovers buzzing: a brand new movie called Bestie, and it’s hitting cinemas on December 16.
No trailer yet. No cast list. Not even a hint about the plot. Just a release date and a title. And honestly? That’s classic Toyin. She loves a good tease.
Here’s the thing that makes this juicy though. Five days before Bestie drops, Funke Akindele’s own December movie, The Four: No One Fights Alone, is set to hit screens too. So Nigerians are basically getting a mini box office showdown this Christmas, whether the two actresses planned it that way or not.
If you’ve been paying attention to Toyin’s career, you’ll know December is her season. She’s been dropping cinema releases every festive period for years now. Remember Ijakumo back in 2022? Then Malaika in 2023, which at the time became her biggest box office hit ever, pulling in over ₦300 million. She followed that up with Alakada: Bad and Boujee in 2024.
But last year is really the one that changed things for her. Oversabi Aunty, her very first time directing, went on to cross ₦1 billion at the box office. That’s not a small feat. It even earned her a shoutout from the National Film and Video Censors Board as one of the year’s box office champions. So naturally, expectations for whatever she does next are sky high.
Think about it. Two of Nollywood’s biggest names dropping major films just days apart, in what’s already shaping up to be a record year for Nigerian cinema. Fans are going to be torn between which one to see first, and honestly, that’s good business for everyone involved, since both films are being distributed by FilmOne.
It’s also worth noting that Abraham hinted at this cinema project a while back, right after she wrapped up her YouTube series Alábọ̀sí 2 in July. She said that would be her last YouTube drop for the year, and told fans something bigger was coming before December. Turns out she wasn’t joking.
So we wait. No trailer, no cast reveal, just a date circled in red on everyone’s calendar. But if Oversabi Aunty taught us anything, it’s that betting against Toyin Abraham right now is not a smart move.
