you’ve been on Nigerian social media today, chances are you’ve seen the name Olu Jacobs trending. And this time, unlike so many times before, it’s true. The veteran actor has died at 84.

His son, Olusoji Jacobs, broke the news himself on Instagram on Wednesday, September 16. He called his father “the Lion of Lufodo” and said the family was grateful “for a life well lived and fought.”

That phrase, “fought,” says a lot. Jacobs had quietly been battling Lewy body dementia ever since his wife, actress Joke Silva, first opened up about the diagnosis back in 2021. It wasn’t easy news to hear then, and somehow it’s still not easy now.

Here’s the thing about Olu Jacobs, though. Long before illness became part of his story, he’d already lived a career most actors only dream of. Born in Kano in 1942, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and worked with names like the BBC, Disney, Universal Pictures and the Royal Shakespeare Company. By the time he settled fully into Nollywood, he brought that same discipline home with him, and it showed. Across five decades, he featured in more than 300 films.

He wasn’t just an actor either. Together with Joke Silva, he built the Lufodo Group, training a whole new generation of Nigerian performers through the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts. That’s the kind of legacy that outlasts any single film role.

The awards, naturally, followed him. An AMAA Best Actor win in 2007. A Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. Even a national honour, the MFR, in 2011. But ask most Nigerians how they’ll remember him, and it’s rarely about the trophies. It’s that voice. That unmistakable, commanding presence the moment he stepped into a scene.

Funny enough, this isn’t even the first time the country has “mourned” Olu Jacobs. Fake death rumours trailed him for years, popping up in 2021, 2022 and again in 2024, and each time his family had to step in and set the record straight. This time, sadly, there’s no correction coming.

He leaves behind his wife of over four decades, Joke Silva, along with their children and grandchildren. For an industry he helped shape from the ground up, this really does feel like the end of an era.
