So there’s a one-minute video going around, and somehow it’s turned into a whole debate about marriage.
Here’s what happened. At a movie premiere in Lagos, Mo Bimpe was caught on camera having a playful little moment with actor Jide Awobona, showing him something on her phone. Nothing dramatic. Her husband, Lateef Adedimeji, was literally sitting right there beside her, looking completely unbothered.
But you know how the internet works. Instead of scrolling past, people zoomed in. Some started asking why Lateef looked “too calm.” Others acted like a harmless chat between friends was some kind of red flag.
Mo Bimpe wasn’t having it.
She went online to address the noise directly, and honestly, her response hit different. She said, “A one minute clip of myself & Jide has somehow become a topic of public analysis.”
And she’s right to find that funny, because when you think about it, two friends talking at an event shouldn’t need a public explanation.
What really stood out was how she flipped the criticism back on the critics. She said, “The fact that so many of you found that interaction strange says more about the relationships you’re used to than it does about mine.” That’s the kind of line that makes you pause and actually think about it.
She went on to explain that her marriage isn’t built on suspicion or control. In her words, “Not every marriage is built on fear, insecurity, and constant monitoring. Some marriages are built on trust, friendship, respect, and Confidence.” And then she added the line everyone’s now quoting: “My husband is a secure man; a brief conversation with a family friend does not threaten our marriage or require anyone’s concern.”
You can kind of see why this struck a nerve. Mo Bimpe and Lateef have been one of Nollywood’s most watched couples since they got married in 2021, and their journey hasn’t been easy. They welcomed triplet sons back in May after years of waiting, and they’ve openly talked about the ridicule and divorce rumours they had to deal with while trying to start a family.
So maybe that’s why this latest wave of judgment felt extra unnecessary to her. After everything they’ve survived as a couple, a friendly hello at a premiere probably feels like the smallest thing to be dragged for.
At the end of the day, she said what a lot of people needed to hear: healthy marriages do exist, even if some folks find that hard to believe.
