Africa Magic Showcase is airing Doyen of Nollywood: Celebrating Olu Jacobs, a documentary about the veteran actor’s life. He died on September 16, 2026, at 84. The premiere already aired on Friday, but you can still catch it on Monday, September 28, at 4:30 pm, or on Wednesday, September 30, at 2:35 pm.
Quite a lot of familiar faces. Filmmaker Femi Odugbemi directed it, and Zuri 24 Media produced it. It walks through Jacobs’ journey in theatre, TV and film, and what he meant to Nigerian entertainment.
The people sharing memories knew him well. His wife, Joke Silva, is there, along with Richard Mofe-Damijo, Taiwo Ajai-Lycett, Patience Ozokwor, Kate Henshaw, Afolabi Adesanya and Jahman Anikulapo.
Mofe-Damijo makes a point that stays with you. He credits Jacobs’ return to Nigeria with helping shape the careers of many people in the industry. That’s a big compliment.
This documentary isn’t fresh off the editing table. It was made for Jacobs’ 80th birthday in 2022 and aired that year. Back then it looked at how he found acting, his life at home, and the mark he left on younger actors.
Now it plays differently. What was a birthday celebration has become a goodbye.
The announcement came with a short tribute that says it well. Jacobs “was more than an actor,” it said, and it closed with the line, “We celebrate the man, the legend and the legacy.”
you grew up watching him, this is a nice way to revisit those years. If you’re younger and only know his name, it’s a good introduction to why people speak about him with so much respect.
