U reveals how Between Two Ferns inspired Curiosity Made Me Ask, why he still gets nervous around older guests, and who’s next on his wishlist.
You know that thing where someone just refuses to blend in with the crowd? That’s basically Isbae U’s whole story.
Before he became the guy asking Nigerian legends, and even a former president, some seriously uncomfortable questions on camera, Isbae U tried a bit of everything. Singing. Rapping. Acting. Nothing quite clicked the way he wanted it to.
And honestly, he says that was on purpose. He didn’t want to end up as “one of them,” just another face in Nigeria’s already crowded skit-making scene.
Speaking on The Morayo Show with Morayo Afolabi-Brown, he put it plainly: “I was done being mediocre, being average.” Ouch, but also, respect?
So where did Curiosity Made Me Ask actually come from? Turns out it wasn’t some big master plan. Isbae U says he stumbled on an old episode of Between Two Ferns, the Zach Galifianakis interview show known for its awkward, deadpan energy, and something just clicked. “I thought, ‘Oh, this is something I can do,'” he said.
Fast forward to December 2023, and that spark turned into a full show. Since then, he’s sat across from names like Pete Edochie, Kate Henshaw, Teni, Bella Shmurda, Tacha, Bobrisky and Charly Boy. Earlier this month, he even landed former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who fielded questions on everything from Aso Rock rent to Afrobeats producers. Not exactly small talk.
Here’s the thing though, even with all that experience, Isbae U says the nerves never really go away, especially with older guests. “Every time. Especially when it comes to people that are way older than me,” he admitted. It’s kind of comforting, honestly. Even the person asking the questions gets a little shaky sometimes.
Some of his older guests have told him to just stay himself and not change his style to impress anyone, advice he seems to be taking seriously.
He also cleared up a rumor that’s been going around, that he’d abandoned everything else for the show. Not true, he says. He’s quietly writing content for other people behind the scenes too.
As for what’s next, Isbae U isn’t short on ambition. His dream guest right now? US President Donald Trump. Bold pick, but hey, curiosity got him this far.
