There is something beautiful about a worship song that doesn’t need too many words. “Onye Kam Ga Si Na Oyiri Gi” is one of those songs.
The title is in Igbo and can be understood as “Who can I say is like You?” It is basically a question that already has an answer. When you’re talking about God, there is nobody who can truly compare with Him.
For this sixth track on The Life Recording, Nathaniel Bassey brings in Mirabel Ekezie, giving the song an even stronger indigenous worship feel. Their voices work around a simple message of God’s greatness and uniqueness, rather than trying to turn the song into something complicated.
What makes this one particularly interesting is the use of Igbo. Nathaniel Bassey has often moved between English and Nigerian indigenous languages in his worship music, and songs like this make it easy for listeners to connect with God using the language they grew up hearing.
The phrase “Onye Kam Ga Si Na Oyiri Gi” has also appeared in other Nigerian gospel worship recordings before this new release, with the phrase carrying the same idea of declaring that there is no one comparable to God.
On The Life Recording, the song comes after “Agbanilagbatan,” “Praise The Lord,” “The Battle Belongs to God (Praise Medley),” “The Potentate” and “Glory to God in the Highest.” That makes it one of the later worship moments on the seven track project.
And honestly, this is probably one of the tracks to sit with quietly. You don’t necessarily need to be doing anything while listening. Just play it, follow the words and let the worship sink in.
If you enjoy Nigerian gospel songs that bring indigenous languages into contemporary worship, “Onye Kam Ga Si Na Oyiri Gi” is definitely worth adding to your playlist.
