Nathaniel Bassey continues The Life Recording with “The Potentate,” the fourth track on the newly released worship project.
If you’re wondering what “Potentate” means, it simply refers to a powerful ruler or someone who has supreme authority. In this song, Nathaniel Bassey uses the word to point to God as the One who reigns above everything.
The song fits perfectly into the direction of the album. The Life Recording was presented as a live worship experience, with Nathaniel Bassey saying the project came from an experience of the River of Life during the recording. He wanted listeners to experience that same atmosphere through the music.
And by the time you get to “The Potentate,” you can see the pattern developing. The project started with “Agbanilagbatan,” moved into “Praise The Lord,” then “The Battle Belongs to God (Praise Medley),” before arriving at this track. The songs are all pointing listeners back to God’s power, faithfulness and greatness.
There is also something interesting about the title because “The Potentate” isn’t just a fancy word used to make the song sound big. It carries a clear picture of God as the supreme ruler. That makes the song more than just a praise track. It is a declaration of who God is and the authority He has.
For longtime followers of Nathaniel Bassey, this kind of worship is nothing new. His music has always had a strong focus on praise, prayer and creating an atmosphere where people can simply concentrate on God. His Hallelujah Challenge also helped take that style of worship far beyond Nigerian churches and into homes around the world.
The Life Recording contains seven tracks in total, with “Glory to God in the Highest,” “Onye Kam Ga Si Na Oyiri Gi” featuring Mirabel Ekezie, and “New Beauty” still coming after “The Potentate.”
If you’re listening to the album from beginning to end, “The Potentate” is one of those tracks that fits perfectly into the praise section of the project.
