Fifteen years after the remix came out, “Nwa Baby (Ashawo)” has passed four million plays on Flavour’s official Audiomack page alone. Some songs simply refuse to grow old.
Flavour first released “Nwa Baby” on his debut album “N’abania”. The remix came later as the third single from his second album “Uplifted”. Billboard has since placed it third on its list of the 50 best Afrobeats songs of all time.
The video was shot in South Africa by Godfather Productions and picked up nominations at the 2011 Channel O Music Video Awards and the Nigeria Music Video Awards.
If “Ada Ada” is your wedding favourite from him, this is the party one. Watch the official video below and stream it from the Audiomack player at the end.
From Rex Lawson’s “Sawale” to “Nwa Baby”
The remix is a remake of Cardinal Rex Lawson’s 1960 hit “Sawale”, so Flavour was building on a highlife classic from the Niger Delta.
In the slang of the song, “nwa baby” means a beautiful girl, while “ashawo” refers to a woman who sleeps around. The story follows a man who comes back from a journey only to find that his partner has not been faithful.
