Go to any Nigerian traditional wedding and there is a good chance this song will play when the bride steps out. More than a decade on, “Ada Ada” is still the wedding anthem.
It sits on Blessed, the album Flavour released in October 2012, and became its fifth single in June 2013 with a video that featured cameos from John Okafor and Nwachukwu Uti.
That video swept the 2013 Nigeria Music Video Awards, winning Video of the Year and Best High Life Video among others. If you liked his newer tune “Ariva”, this is where a lot of that love for him started.
Watch the classic video below, then stream “Ada Ada” on the Spotify player at the end.
Who is the “Ada” in “Ada Ada”?
In an Igbo family, the first daughter is called Ada. The song tells the story of an Ada’s traditional wedding, which is why so many brides pick it for their big day.
Beyond one family, the song celebrates traditional marriage across Africa and the beauty of African women, so it travels well far beyond Igbo land.
