If you enjoy old school Nigerian music that gives you time to settle into the song rather than rushing through it, “Give Us Power” by Sir Daddy Kris is one to check out.
The song was released in 2023 as the second track on the Austin Avuru Special project. It runs for more than 11 minutes, which gives it that extended performance feel that is common with some of the traditional and highlife recordings from the region. Apple Music lists the project as a four track Afrobeat release.
“Give Us Power” is part of a project that also contains “Austin Avuru Special,” “Okwe Anane” and “Glorious Praise.” The four songs together run for about 50 minutes, making the project more like a full musical session than a collection of short modern singles.
Sir Daddy Kris is a Nigerian musician whose music is closely connected with the Delta music scene. His Audiomack profile identifies him with Delta, Nigeria, and describes his style through genres including Afro Fusion and Highlife. The profile also describes him as a living legend known for his stage performances.
Interestingly, “Give Us Power” was already available on Audiomack in November 2023, where it was uploaded by the official Sir Daddy Kris account. The recording has continued to attract listeners on the platform, with thousands of plays recorded on the track page.
The song is also one of the better known tracks from the Austin Avuru Special project. Apple Music currently lists “Give Us Power” among Sir Daddy Kris’s top songs, alongside “Destiny,” “Glorious Praise” and “Okwe Anane.”
What makes the song interesting is its length and performance style. At over 11 minutes, it gives listeners a chance to experience the music as a longer performance rather than the short format that dominates today’s streaming releases.
If you enjoy discovering Nigerian songs from the Delta music scene, especially longer highlife and Afro Fusion recordings, “Give Us Power” is one worth listening to.
