Sometimes, the people around us can see our growth before we can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A friend may congratulate you for getting a new job. Your family may celebrate your business becoming profitable. Someone may remind you how far you have come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, instead of feeling proud, you may think about what is still missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may have completed university but worry about getting a better job. You may have secured a promotion but immediately start thinking about the next position. You may have started a business but focus on the targets you have not reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This experience is increasingly familiar among young Nigerians navigating careers, relationships, finances and personal growth.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is not necessarily a lack of gratitude. Sometimes, we simply become so focused on where we are going that we stop noticing where we have been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questions about your salary, relationship status, career and living arrangements may make you feel like you are constantly being assessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, reaching one milestone may provide only temporary satisfaction before another expectation appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You finish NYSC, and the next question becomes, \u201cWhat are you doing now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You get a job, and the conversation shifts to your salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You get married, and people begin asking about children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You start a business, and the next question may be about expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is always another destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That can make it difficult to sit with the achievement you have already made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social media has made other people’s progress easier to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every day, Nigerians can scroll through announcements about new jobs, international scholarships, weddings, business launches, property purchases<\/a>, relocations and career achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone is celebrating a new car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another person has moved to Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone else has launched a successful business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another person has just completed a master’s degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These achievements may be genuine and worth celebrating. However, social media rarely shows the entire journey behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see the graduation photograph but not the financial pressure behind the degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see the new office but not the years of applications that came before the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see the wedding pictures but not the difficult conversations that preceded the marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see the business launch but not the months of uncertainty involved in building it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This creates an unfair comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are comparing your ordinary, complicated life with someone else’s carefully selected moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, this can create the feeling that everyone is moving forward except you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can also make you postpone happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest mistakes we make is measuring progress only through visible achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not all growth comes with a certificate, promotion or bank alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, progress looks like becoming more confident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may mean learning to say no without feeling guilty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may mean leaving an unhealthy friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It could mean managing your money better than you did two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It might mean becoming more patient with yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For someone who once struggled to speak during meetings, confidently sharing an opinion at work is progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For someone who previously depended entirely on others financially, paying some of their own bills is progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For someone who once avoided difficult conversations, learning to communicate honestly is progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These achievements may never appear on LinkedIn or Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, they can significantly change your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why comparing your journey only through material achievements can give you an incomplete picture of your growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may not have the salary you want yet, but perhaps you have developed skills that can increase your earning potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may not own a home, but perhaps you have finally started saving consistently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may not have your dream career, but you may now understand what kind of work you actually want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those things count.

How to Start Noticing Your Progress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first step is to change what you measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of asking only, \u201cWhat have I achieved?\u201d, consider asking, \u201cWhat can I do now that I could not do before?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That question can reveal forms of progress that are easy to overlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also keep a simple record of your achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Write down completed projects, difficult situations you handled, new skills, financial improvements, personal boundaries and important decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not have to become another demanding task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A note on your phone can be enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Review it occasionally, particularly when you feel like you are not making progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may be surprised by what you find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another useful practice is comparing yourself with your past self rather than everyone around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can want more without treating what you currently have as worthless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let People Be Proud of You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, we also need to learn how to receive compliments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When someone says, \u201cI am proud of you,\u201d resist the urge to immediately explain why you have not done enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply say thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person may be seeing something you have become too accustomed to notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your parents may remember the child who once needed help with everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your old friends may remember the person who was uncertain about their future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your colleagues may remember how nervous you were when you started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can therefore see changes that have become invisible to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accepting their recognition does not mean believing you have reached the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It simply means acknowledging the distance you have already travelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You Can Still Want More<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Recognising your progress does not require you to abandon ambition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can still want a better salary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can still dream of owning a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can still want to grow your business, travel, pursue another qualification or build a better life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference is learning to appreciate the present while working toward the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your life is not waiting to begin after the next promotion, relationship, salary increase or major breakthrough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is already happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, occasionally, stop and look back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember the things that once frightened you but no longer do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember the opportunities you once prayed for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember the person you were before certain experiences changed you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may discover that your progress has been happening quietly all along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, you are not behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
