Governor Peter Mbah rolled out a fresh list of 101 political appointees on Monday, and tucked right in there are two names movie lovers will instantly recognize: Rachael Okonkwo and Eucharia Anunobi.

Okonkwo, the actress many of us know as Nkoli Nwa Nsukka from her hit film series, has been named Senior Special Assistant on Film and Creative Industry Development. Basically, she’s now in charge of helping shape how the film industry grows in the state. Makes sense too, since she’s actually from Uzo-Uwani in Enugu, so this isn’t some random outsider being handed a job. It’s someone from home stepping into a role that fits her career.

Anunobi’s appointment is a bit different but just as interesting. The veteran actress, who’s been in the industry since the ’90s and has over 90 films to her name, is now Special Assistant on Women Mobilisation for Enugu-North Zone. If you’ve followed her journey, you’ll know she moved from acting into ministry work years ago, so this new role feels like it lines up nicely with the community-focused path she’s already been on.

Here’s the bigger picture, though. These two aren’t the only names on the list. The announcement, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, covered three categories of appointees: seven Special Advisers, six Senior Special Assistants, and a whopping 88 Special Assistants. That’s a lot of people getting called into government work at once.

Why does this matter beyond just “celebrity gets a job”? Well, it’s part of a pattern we keep seeing across Nigeria, where entertainers who’ve built strong public profiles and grassroots love get pulled into politics. Governments like tapping into that kind of visibility and trust. And for someone like Okonkwo, putting an actress in charge of the creative industry portfolio could actually mean real attention (and maybe funding) for Nollywood people working in Enugu.
