In Nigeria, it is common to hear comments about a man’s beard looking dirty or harbouring germs.

Some people even believe clean-shaven men are automatically more hygienic. However, science does not fully support that assumption.

The truth is more straightforward. Beards are not necessarily unhygienic. Like the rest of the body, facial hair can carry bacteria. Good grooming and regular washing are more important than simply having or removing a beard.

Why do people think beards are dirty?

The belief that beards are unhygienic has existed for decades. It may partly come from how people perceive facial hair.

Research has shown that people can perceive bearded men as less hygienic than clean-shaven men. However, perception does not always match scientific evidence.

A beard can collect sweat, skin oils, food particles and other substances. This can happen, especially when someone does not wash their face and beard regularly.

Still, having bacteria on your beard does not automatically mean that the beard is dirty or dangerous.

Bacteria naturally live on human skin. They can also be found on your hands, scalp, mouth and other parts of your body.

Therefore, the real issue is often personal hygiene rather than the presence of facial hair.

What does research say about beards and bacteria?

One of the earlier studies examining this issue was published in 1967. Researchers compared bacteria found on washed and unwashed faces.

They also compared men with beards and those without facial hair.

Interestingly, the highest amount of bacteria was found on unwashed, clean-shaven faces. This was followed by unwashed bearded faces.

Washed bearded faces had less bacteria. Washed clean-shaven faces had the least.

The findings suggest an important point. Washing your face matters more than whether you have a beard.

As Professor John Tregoning of Imperial College London explained, bacteria can live on any part of the body.

This includes areas with hair and areas without hair.

Therefore, a beard itself should not automatically be considered unhygienic.

Can a beard trap bacteria?

Yes, facial hair can collect bacteria and other substances.

However, this does not make every beard a health risk.

A poorly maintained beard can collect sweat, oil, dead skin cells and food particles. This can become uncomfortable and may contribute to unpleasant odours.

The problem can become more noticeable in Nigeria’s hot and humid weather. Sweat can build up around the face and beard, especially during outdoor activities.

Men who exercise frequently may also notice more sweat around their facial hair.

Regular cleaning can help prevent this build-up.

Wash your face and beard with suitable products. Rinse thoroughly and dry the beard properly afterwards.

You should also avoid constantly touching your beard with unwashed hands.

What about bearded healthcare workers?

The question becomes more important in environments where infection control is critical.

Researchers have studied whether beards affect infection risks among healthcare workers and surgeons.

Some studies suggest that facial hair can collect bacteria. Other research has found little meaningful difference between bearded and clean-shaven workers.

The effectiveness of protective equipment also matters.

For healthcare workers, properly wearing protective masks and following infection-control procedures remain important.

Therefore, having a beard does not automatically mean someone poses an infection risk.

Does shaving make your face cleaner?

Shaving can make facial hygiene easier for some people. Without hair, washing and cleaning the skin may be more straightforward.

However, shaving does not remove all bacteria from your face.

Your skin naturally contains microorganisms, whether you have facial hair or not.

In fact, shaving can sometimes cause its own problems.

Frequent shaving may cause razor bumps, small cuts, irritation or ingrown hairs. These problems can be particularly uncomfortable for men with coarse or tightly curled hair.

Therefore, shaving should be based on personal preference and grooming needs.

It should not be treated as the only way to maintain good hygiene.

How Nigerian men can keep their beards clean

If you have a beard, maintaining it does not have to be complicated.

Wash your beard regularly

Clean your beard regularly to remove sweat, oil, dirt and food particles.

If you exercise or sweat heavily, you may need to clean it more often.

Keep your hands clean

Your hands touch phones, door handles, money and other surfaces throughout the day.

Touching your beard with dirty hands can transfer microorganisms to your face.

Wash your hands before repeatedly touching or grooming your beard.

Dry your beard properly

Avoid leaving your beard constantly damp after washing.

Gently dry it with a clean towel. A damp environment can encourage unwanted microbial growth.

Keep your grooming tools clean

Combs, brushes and beard trimmers can collect hair, skin oils and other debris.

Clean these tools regularly. Also, avoid sharing personal grooming equipment with other people.

Trim when necessary

Longer beards require more attention.

Regular trimming can make cleaning easier and help you maintain a neat appearance.

If your beard becomes difficult to manage, reducing its length may make your grooming routine simpler.

So, are beards unhygienic?

Not necessarily.

A beard can carry bacteria, but so can clean-shaven skin. The presence of bacteria alone does not mean that someone has poor hygiene.

What matters more is how well you care for your face and facial hair.

Regular washing, clean grooming tools and good personal hygiene can help keep a beard clean.

For Nigerian men, especially those living in hot and humid conditions, paying attention to sweat and product build-up can make beard care even more important.

Ultimately, you do not need to shave your beard simply because you are worried about bacteria.

If you prefer a beard, keep it clean. If you prefer a clean-shaven face, maintain that properly too.

Good hygiene comes from consistent care, not simply from having less hair.

Are beards really unhygienic?
