You can also spend a weekend alone in your room without feeling lonely at all.

That difference matters because loneliness and social isolation are not the same thing. A new study suggests that loneliness may have a stronger connection with poor mental health and lower wellbeing than simply having fewer social contacts.

The study, published on August 4, 2026, found evidence that loneliness may contribute to depression, lower life satisfaction and poorer general health. Social isolation also affected wellbeing, but its relationship with health appeared narrower.

This distinction is important in everyday Nigerian life.

You may have hundreds of contacts on WhatsApp but nobody you feel comfortable calling when you are struggling. You may sit with colleagues at work every day but feel disconnected from everyone around you.

You may also live alone and genuinely enjoy your independence.

The issue is not simply how many people are around you. It is whether you feel connected to them.

Why Feeling Lonely Can Matter for Your Health

The World Health Organization estimates that about one in six people worldwide experiences loneliness.

Loneliness happens when the relationships in your life do not provide the level of closeness or connection you want. Social isolation, on the other hand, refers more to how often you interact with other people.

The two can happen together, but they do not always.

Think about someone who works remotely from Lagos. They may spend most days without face-to-face interaction but still feel happy because they regularly speak with family and close friends.

Another person may work in a busy office, attend social events and have an active WhatsApp group but still feel deeply disconnected.

That second person may be experiencing loneliness.

Previous research has connected loneliness and social isolation with poorer mental and physical health. These include depression and some cardiovascular conditions.

However, researchers cannot simply say that loneliness directly causes every health problem associated with it.

Someone dealing with poor health may become less active and withdraw from friends. Financial difficulties, disability and difficult childhood experiences can also affect both health and social relationships.

The new study tried to understand these relationships more carefully.

Researchers examined health and lifestyle information from about 500,000 people in the UK Biobank. They also compared siblings and used genetic information through a method called Mendelian randomisation.

Using different methods helped researchers examine whether the results were consistent rather than depending on one type of evidence.

The findings suggested that loneliness may contribute to depression and lower wellbeing. There was also evidence linking loneliness with a higher risk of self-harm or a suicide attempt.

The relationship can also work in the opposite direction.

Depression can make you withdraw from people, which can increase loneliness. Poor wellbeing can also make you feel more isolated.

This means loneliness and mental health problems can sometimes reinforce each other.

The researchers also found a link between loneliness and poorer general health, including multimorbidity. This means having two or more long-term health conditions.

However, the study did not find consistent evidence that loneliness or social isolation directly affected specific conditions such as stroke, heart failure, coronary artery disease, high systolic blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.

That does not mean there is no connection.

It simply means the evidence from this study was not strong enough to establish one for those specific conditions.

For you, the message is not that feeling lonely for a few days will automatically make you sick.

Instead, persistent loneliness deserves attention.

You might notice it when you stop looking forward to conversations with people you usually enjoy. You might feel disconnected even when your family is around.

You might have friends but feel that you cannot honestly tell anyone what you are going through.

These experiences should not be dismissed simply because you are not physically alone.

What You Can Do About Loneliness

Reducing loneliness does not always mean attending more parties or joining every social gathering.

Sometimes, you need better connections rather than more connections.

Call the friend you have not spoken to in months. Have a proper conversation instead of exchanging WhatsApp emojis.

Spend time with someone without constantly checking your phone.

Join a church group, book club, professional community, sports group or neighbourhood activity that genuinely interests you.

If you are struggling emotionally, consider speaking with someone you trust or seeking professional support.

The study also highlights an important difference for families, communities and organisations.

Helping someone who is socially isolated may require creating more opportunities for interaction. Helping someone who feels lonely may require something deeper.

They may need relationships where they feel heard, valued and understood.

You do not have to be surrounded by people to feel connected.

Sometimes, one honest conversation can mean more than being in a crowded room.

And if you regularly feel lonely despite having people around you, that feeling is worth taking seriously.

You can be surrounded by people and still feel lonely.
