Maureen Solomon-Okereke left acting at her career’s peak to raise her children. Years later, she explains why she’d make the same choice again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some careers end with a scandal. Others end quietly, at a kitchen table, with a decision no one outside the family ever sees coming.
For Maureen Solomon-Okereke, that decision came in 2011. She was one of Nollywood’s most familiar faces, with credits alongside heavyweights like Genevieve Nnaji and Ramsey Nouah. Then she simply stopped showing up on set, and stayed away for seven years.

Speaking recently on Channels Television’s Rubbin’ Minds, the actress explained that her first child fit easily into her working life. He could travel with her to locations and film sets without much disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her second child was a different story. Juggling a newborn with the unpredictable hours of movie production stopped working, and something had to give. So she gave up the movies.

It’s easy to assume a decision like that comes wrapped in bitterness. Solomon-Okereke says hers didn’t.
Her children are grown now, 19 and 20 years old, and she looks back at the trade-off with total peace. She’s pointed to a moment when her daughter, then around five, needed more of her attention than a film schedule could allow, and she chose to be present.

She’s also firmly rejected rumours that her husband pushed her out of the industry, insisting the choice was hers alone from start to finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s the twist: she never actually stopped watching Nollywood evolve, even from the sidelines. That’s likely why her comeback, after nearly a decade away, has felt far less bumpy than most industry insiders expected.
She’s also not shy about pushing back on how the industry now works, including its obsession with follower counts as a stand-in for talent. Her view is simple, she doesn’t buy into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the most surprising part of her story is how it began. She hadn’t gone looking for a role at all, she’d shown up at an audition venue to find her sister. Handed a script almost as an afterthought, she read it, and a career was born. Her first paycheck, for a 2000 film debut, came to just \u20a62,000.
