Your bank can’t just pull it back, so act fast

When you type an account number into a Nigerian banking app, the name of the account owner pops up before you confirm, and that small check is supposed to stop mistakes. People still send money to the wrong account every day, usually because of one swapped digit, a number copied from an old chat or a rush to pay a seller before the price changes. If it has just happened to you, the hour after the transfer matters far more than anything you do next week.

It’s a sick feeling, especially when the money was meant for rent, school fees or a supplier who is waiting at the other end. Panic won’t help, but a quick report, a clear paper trail and a little patience give you the best chance of getting it back.

Call your bank before you call anybody else

Contact your bank through its customer care line, the chat inside your banking app or the nearest branch, and tell them plainly that you made a transfer to the wrong account and want it recalled. Have the details ready so the agent doesn’t keep you waiting, including the amount, the date and time, the account number you sent to, the receiving bank and the transaction reference or session ID on your receipt. Screenshot that receipt now, before it gets buried in your gallery.

Ask for a complaint or ticket number and write it down along with the name of the person you spoke to. Then send a short email to the bank’s official complaints address repeating everything, so there’s a written record with a date on it. If you end up taking the matter further, that email and ticket number will be the proof that you reported it straight away.

Photo: Joecalih / Unsplash

Why your bank can’t simply reverse the money

Once a transfer has gone through and landed in someone else’s account, the money is sitting with another customer, often at another bank. Your bank can’t just reach in and take it out. What usually happens is that your bank sends a request to the receiving bank, and that bank contacts its customer to explain the mistake and ask for permission to return the funds.

If the money is still in the account and the owner agrees, it can come back to you. If they’ve already spent it, can’t be reached or simply refuse, things get slower and harder, which is exactly why speed matters. A report made within minutes gives the receiving bank a chance to act before the money moves on. When someone refuses to return funds that clearly aren’t theirs, speak to a lawyer about your options rather than trying to settle it with threats on the phone.

Two weeks gone and nothing has moved? Take it to the CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria says you must report a complaint to your own bank first and give it about two weeks to resolve it, and some banks are quicker than that. If the bank hasn’t sorted it out in that time, you can escalate to the CBN’s Consumer Protection Department by email or by letter addressed to the Director, Consumer Protection Department, Central Business District, Abuja, which you can drop at the head office or any CBN branch. The steps are on the CBN complaints management page.

Your complaint should include your name, address, phone number and email, the name of your bank, the date and history of the transaction, the amount involved, copies of your receipt and the proof that you first complained to your bank. Give your account details, but never include your PIN, password or OTP in any complaint, to anyone, for any reason.

Money landed in your account by mistake? Don’t send it to whoever calls

Sometimes it works the other way round, and you get an alert for money you weren’t expecting, followed minutes later by a call or a WhatsApp message from a stranger begging you to send it back. The sender might be honest, but this is also a known trick, where money taken from a hacked account is pushed through innocent people so that it becomes harder to trace, and the “refund” you send goes to a different account entirely.

The safe move is to tell the caller to report it to their own bank, then contact your bank yourself and let it handle the return through the proper channel. Don’t spend the money and don’t forward it to any account number someone gives you over the phone. Keeping money you know isn’t yours can land you in trouble, and so can passing it along for someone you’ve never met. The same scammers often follow up with requests for codes, so read up on the WhatsApp verification code scam before you reply to anyone.

Photo: Mikhail Nilov / Pexels

A few seconds of checking saves you all of this

Read the name that appears after you enter the account number, every single time, and stop if it doesn’t match who you’re paying. For a big amount, send a small test sum first and ask the person to confirm they got it before you send the rest. Avoid copying numbers from old chats or from a message forwarded by someone else, and if a vendor suddenly says they’ve changed accounts, call them on a number you already know before you pay. For online sellers you’ve never dealt with, it’s worth checking whether the business is registered with CAC too.

If you’re the one receiving money, wait until it shows in your actual balance before you release goods, because a transfer screenshot isn’t money until it shows in your balance. Busy festive weeks, when you’re sending gifts and paying for aso-ebi and wedding contributions in a hurry, are exactly when one wrong digit slips through, so slow down for the extra five seconds that the name check takes.

Sent money to the wrong account?
